I come across this common misconception far too often. Let’s clear up the confusion, girls! Lifting, lifting heavy. will not make you look like a man!
Let's Present the Facts:
Men and women both produce the hormones testosterone, estrogen, progesterone and DHEA.
Men, however, produce a much higher number of testosterone (about 10 to 20 times more) and DHEA than women, where women have a much higher concentration of estrogen and progesterone.
The primary factor enabling men to build muscle is their levels of testosterone. Females produce a small fraction of this natural muscle-building hormone, and will not be able to put on the bulky muscle that our fellow male gym-goers do, even after hundreds of workouts. Typically, females also have lower percentages of type II muscle fibers than men, a fact which further limits the ability for substantial muscular hypertrophy, or growth, in females.

Most serious female athletes with years of training behind them don’t look like men either. If you are asking why there are female bodybuilders who look (and sound) like men, it is because they are taking androgens. Androgens (synthetic steroid hormones) are better known as anabolic steroids. Anabolic substances will super-enhance muscular development, and bring about male characteristics.
Any woman who lifts weights, will, over time, become stronger, and will look toned and defined, but bulk up like our male counterparts? Not likely!
In fact, lifting weights have the following benefits when done with proper form:
- 1. Better sleep and more energy
- 2. More effective fat loss due to a faster metabolism (muscle is metabolic active tissue, and make you expend more calories)
- 3. Heart and bone health
- 4. Stress relief
- 5. Sexy curves (muscle creates those sexy contours)
The absolute worst thing that can happen is that you will look smokin’ hot in those skinny jeans!
Convinced? What are you waiting for? Lift, ladies!
